F.A.Q.’s

Here is a start to some of the most frequently asked questions we get around here:

Sewing Related

Where do you mostly buy your fabric?  I find fabric to be really expensive, do you have any other ideas for places to look for fabric at reasonable prices? When I started sewing I bought my fabric at Joann’s (sale rack) and Walmart.   I made it a point to browse the $1 fabric section at Walmart everytime I went.  Now that I’ve been exposed to the craft/sewing community online, I’ve purchased online and found a great quilting shop in town that has quality and cool fabric.  I used to think fabric was expensive at the store, but have found that it is more expensive online, though it is really cool fabric and you can look for sales! I would suggest buying the inexpensive to practice and then as you get better, maybe you could splurge a little on the good stuff. You can also buy at thrift stores and garage sales, sometimes people get rid of all their fabric. Also, at thrift stores you can buy a skirt and get a lot of yardage and turn it into curtains, think Sound of Music!

I learned to sew in school and from being around my Mom who sews. I remember sewing in Home Ec in Jr. High and then I took a class in college.  Other than that, I’ve just practiced and made lots of stuff.  You can take classes at a super store or try a local quilt shop, support the little guy!  Make sure you take one that will teach you how to read a pattern.  Once you know that basic, you can sew anything!

If you find a fabric that you like how much do you usually buy?

I used to just buy what I needed for a particular project when I had one in mind. Now I’m a browser and buy when I like a fabric and then make something out of it later. I usually buy at least a yard and more if it’s on sale.
