We usually check out one or two drawing or craft books from the library each week. This book by Ed Emberely sparked some interest in drawing trees and then an entire jungle with The Henry family on a safari. See that little one crawling? That’s Erin and Sean is in one of the trees getting a coconut. Another favorite of ours from his collection is The Great Thumbprint Drawing Book. It has lots of creative ideas to keep little ones and big ones entertained.
Here is a list of all his drawing books:
- Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book of Animals, Little, Brown, 1970.
- Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book: Make a World, Little, Brown, 1972.
- Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book of Faces, Little, Brown, 1975.
- Ed Emberley’s Big Green Drawing Book, Little, Brown, 1979.
- Ed Emberley’s Big Orange Drawing Book, Little, Brown, 1980.
- Ed Emberley’s Big Purple Drawing Book, Little, Brown, 1981.
- Ed Emberley’s Big Red Drawing Book, Little, Brown, 1987.
- Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book of Weirdos, Little, Brown. 2004
- Ed Emberley’s Drawing Book of Trucks and Trains, Little, Brown. 2004
- Picture Pie: A Circle Drawing Book, Little, Brown, 1990.
- Picture Pie II: A Drawing Book and Stencil, Little, Brown, 1996.
- Ed Emberley’s Great Thumbprint Drawing Book, Little, Brown, 1977.
- Ed Emberley’s Fingerprint Drawing Book, Little, Brown, 2000
One more thing, here is a link to Ed Emberley’s website with some activities and some drawing samplers. Enjoy!

hey Nancy, I was just checking out some stuff of Ed Emberley’s the other day, hoping to order a book or two for PJ. So neat to see Ian enjoying it…how creative he is!
Also, I love the shirt you made for Erin…she is adorable, thanks for the pics. She looks a lot like James, I think!
What a great idea!! I hadn’t thought about guided drawing as an activity, but that’s just one more great thing about peeking into other’s lives through blogging.
We’re inspired, thanks!
